Level III

Service Description

The Level III course is the required course to be able to carry a gun. In this course, the student must pass a written test in order to become certified to carry a gun. This course combines classroom time, physical instruction on handcuffing, holds and restraints, and weapon retention. All participating students will spend half of one day at the shooting range and pass a shooting test for firearm qualification. The student must qualify with the style of weapon they plan on carrying. For example; if the student shoots a semiautomatic pistol, and passes the shooting test with their weapon of choice, then they may carry a semiautomatic pistol in any caliber they choose, but no less than a 9mm. After the completion of this course, passing both the firing range and written exam, the student will receive a certificate of completion. At that time the student can take the certificate to any security company they choose to apply to and work for. However, they cannot carry the gun until the security company sends in the certificate with the application for armed security pocket card. Once that card comes in, then you may carry the gun. The license is good for 2 years from the data it is issued from the state. The officer must re-qualify every 2 years with an 8-hour course to be able to stay armed and have the active commission card.
